Why Is My AC Not Cooling? 7 Common Causes (and the Fix)

1. The air filter is clogged

This is the most common and most overlooked cause. In the UAE's dust, filters block up within weeks, choking airflow so the unit runs but barely cools. 2. Low refrigerant (gas) — usually from a leak

If the air is only slightly cool, the pipes ice up, or cooling fades over weeks, the refrigerant is probably low. Air conditioners don't use up gas, so low gas means a leak. 3. A dirty condenser coil (outdoor unit)

The outdoor unit dumps heat outside. When its coil is caked in dust and sand — very common here — it can't release heat, so the indoor air never gets cold. Fix: clear leaves and debris around the outdoor unit; a heavy build-up needs a proper coil clean during AC maintenance.

4. A failed capacitor or fan motor

5. A frozen evaporator coil

6. Thermostat or settings issue

Sometimes it's simple: the thermostat is set to 'fan' instead of 'cool', the temperature is set too high, or the batteries/sensor have failed. Fix: confirm it's on 'cool' and set a few degrees below room temperature. If the reading looks wrong, the thermostat or sensor may need replacing.

7. A faulty compressor

The compressor is the heart of the system. If it has failed, the AC runs but never cools, often with tripping or unusual noise. Fix: this is the most serious cause — a technician will test it and advise honestly whether a repair or a replacement unit is the better value.
