AC Making Noise or Bad Smell? Here's What It Means

A healthy AC runs quietly and smells of nothing. New noises or odours are early warnings — catching them now is far cheaper than waiting for a breakdown. Here's what the common ones mean.

Rattling or vibrating

Usually loose screws, panels or debris in the outdoor unit — sometimes a failing fan mount. Fix: tighten and clear debris; if it continues, a part is loosening and should be checked before it damages the fan.

Buzzing or humming

Often an electrical issue — a failing capacitor, contactor or motor struggling to start. Fix: this is an electrical fault for a licensed technician; see AC repair. Don't ignore buzzing with a unit that won't start.

Clicking or screeching

Constant clicking can be a relay or thermostat fault; screeching can be a worn fan bearing or belt. Fix: have the motor and electrical parts inspected before the part seizes.

Musty or mouldy smell

The classic UAE smell — mould and bacteria growing on a damp coil or in the drain line and ducts. Fix: a deep coil and filter clean, and for ducted systems, duct cleaning and sanitisation.

Burning or electrical smell

Treat this as urgent. A burning or hot-plastic smell can mean overheating wiring or a motor. Fix: switch the AC off at the breaker and call a technician immediately — this is a fire-safety issue, not a wait-and-see one.

Rotten or sewage smell

Usually a dry or dirty drain trap letting odours back in, or debris in the drain line. Fix: the drain line is flushed and sanitised during a service.

Rule of thumb: musty smells and rattles can wait for a service; burning smells and buzzing units that won't start should be switched off and checked the same day.
